Welcome to the Environmental Education Association of Alabama!

The Environmental Education Association of Alabama (EEAA), is a non-profit group comprised of educators and professionals involved in teaching about the environment. EEAA is an affiliate of the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE). Throughout the year, EEAA conducts Workshops, hosts an annual Conference, and offers Members' Trips to various natural sites. EEAA also sponsors an annual awards program, maintains free teaching trunks and offers financial grants to its membership.

EEAA WANTS YOU!

E-mail Print PDF

eeaaAt the annual conference,  EEAA elects new representatives for its Board of Directors. This year we have several opening on the Board. Show your commitment to EEAA and environmental education by serving on the EEAA Board. If you or someone you know might be interested, please complete and submit a Nomination Form.

The EEAA Board of Directors provides the leadership for the organization and determines the direction that EEAA moves and the activities the group participates in. If you want to have your voice heard and lend your hand in directing environmental education in Alabama, this is your chance.

EEAA Board members serve 3 year terms, and either serve as a Regional Coordinator—a representative from a particular In-Service region of the state who acts as the local contact person and coordinator for that region, or as an At-Large member. The EEAA Board is made up of 11 Regional Directors and up to 14 At-Large Members. If you have any questions about serving on the Board, feel free to contact your EEAA Regional Coordinator by visiting www.EEAA.us and clicking the “About EEAA” button, then click the “Regional Coordinators” link in the left column to view a list of Alabama counties (in the right column of the page) where you can click on your county.

Each Board member is responsible for representing EEAA within their region and state-wide and for promoting EEAA and its activities and programs. Board members meet 4-5 times per year, usually on Saturdays, and the location varies throughout the year. Each Board member is also responsible for coordinating EEAA activities within their area (EEAA-sponsored workshops, members’ excursions/ field trips, EEAA representation at local festivals, presentations about EEAA and environmental education to local groups, etc.).

Yes, it sounds like a lot of work, but it is extremely valuable and worthwhile work! And you will never find a nicer, friendlier, more entertaining group of people to work with anywhere!!!

This is your chance to make your voice heard and help determine where environmental education goes in Alabama in the future! Download the Board Nomination form and hopefully in March, you too can join the EEAA Board of Directors.

A touch of Geology and Literary Arts

March 1-3, 2012

Camp McDowell

Come gather with educators who share your passion for teaching about the natural world.  The annual EEAA Conference is a chance to get rejuvenated about teaching as well as to meet others in the field.  The gathering will be at beautiful Camp McDowell, near the Bankhead National Forest in northwestern Alabama.

You will get the chance to hike into deep sandstone canyons for a close up look at geology at work with some of the leading geologists of Alabama, including Dr Jim Lacefield, author of Lost Worlds in Alabama Rocks, who is our Friday keynote speaker.  You can also choose to canoe the waters of Clear Creek with Dr. Bill Deutsch, the founder of Alabama Water Watch, and learn how to sample for water quality using the invertebrates found there. You may choose to hike into Kinlock Shelter with Big Dave, Senior Naturalist at McDowell Environmental Center.

Jeff Hughes Will be Missed by All

E-mail Print PDF

jeff_hughes_revcredEEAA has lost it's heart and soul. Jeff Hughes was a founding member of this organization and he loved environmental education. He has dedicated over 20 years to ensuring that environmental education was a vital part of Alabama's schools as well as informal education in our state. Jeff officially served as treasurer but he was more than treasurer. If you needed an answer about how EEAA does something, Jeff was the man to ask. He was involved in all aspects of EEAA and always went the extra mile to make sure EEAA was the best organization it could be. He inspired all of us to be better environmental educators by cheering us on, encouraging us and offering support. He was a loving and loyal friend. EEAA will feel the void left by his passing. In his memory and with his dedication to lead and inspire us we will continue along our journey being better for having known him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Jeff Hughes Memorial Fund through EEAA (click the "MAKE A DONATION" button above).
